Clearing up the myths about VoIP

A growing number of SMBs are now benefiting from the cost savings and added features provided by a VoIP phone system. However, there are still many misconceptions about the quality and reliability of VoIP service.

This document is intended to address and dispel the main objections for implementing Internet telecommunications that are resonating within the industry. It will also provide substantial rationale for dispelling the myths about VoIP that once appeared to be obstacles for successful businesses.

Myth #1: VoIP isn't widely used
Traditional ISDN and PSTN lines are still the norm, but not for much longer. It's no longer a matter of if, but when VoIP will become the de facto standard for how phone calls are made. McKinsey Consulting is predicting that over £1bn of UK landline revenue will be from VoIP within the next few years.

It is no longer a question of whether VoIP will wipe out traditional telephony, but a question of how quickly it will do so. – The Economist "How The Internet Killed The Phone Business" (Sept. 2005)

According to the Gartner Group, Voice/data convergence based on IP telephony and VoIP will be under way in more than 95 percent of major companies by 2010.

The IP telephony phenomenon is a global one. Businesses are replacing their traditional telephone switchboard and private branch exchange (PBX) systems with IP solutions at a tremendous rate.

Myth #2: Voice quality is bad
Many legacy and low-end VoIP systems don't deliver high quality sound – for example, parts of words missing, noticeable time lapses when people are speaking, or delays in the sound arriving. vivi® offer superior sound quality, which is actually of a higher quality than a standard BT analogue or ISDN Line!

vivi® always recommend use of a Draytek Vigor Router, as these have been largely tested on our system and significantly affect the performance of your phone system for the better. A low quality router which is not designed to handle voice data often cause issues on the network – this in turn reduces call quality.

Myth #3: The VoIP system is unreliable
If your phone network was to go down or you experienced a power failure whilst using some VoIP phone systems, you would lose your ability to communicate. This is understandably a huge concern to those

who are looking to switch to VoIP.

The vivi® service has an automatic failover service to help you in the event of a power failure or network outage. If your power goes, your incoming calls will automatically be routed to the termination point of the call group, which you can set up to either be an answer phone, group of mobiles, or even a landline number.

Myth #4: VoIP is not secure
Our dedicated servers are extremely secure and are protected by a multitude of security protocols to ensure that attempts to breach them are prevented. However, the security of your internal network is your responsibility. The use of a good, business class router such as the Draytek Vigor range is always recommended by us as the range provides added security options. vivi® is more than happy to advise your technical department on how to set up these options to dramatically reduce the likelihood of a breach in your internal network.

Myth #5: VoIP is complicated
The installation of a vivi® system is very quick. Phones can be pre-configured to your required settings before dispatch – meaning that they simply need to be connected to your network and they will be ready to use. Alternatively, if you prefer, we can arrange an expert installation at a time that best suits you.

The numerous features are easy to maintain and direct. You can control your own voicemail, call forwarding, auto attendant, call groups, call routing and lots more on our online control manager. Alternatively, give us a call, and your dedicated account manager can make changes on your behalf.

Myth #6: Switching to VoIP is a huge investment
vivi® provides hosted VoIP phone systems – this means that the only hardware required at your location are phones and a recommended router. A hosted system does not require expensive servers on site, making the purchase of the phone system extremely cost effective and worthwhile.

Myth #7: VoIP systems are constantly evolving and upgrades are very expensive
Many other large VoIP suppliers lock you into their costly upgrades for software and hardware. vivi® provides free software upgrades, adding new features and capabilities to your system as and when they are available – and only if you want them. vivi® clients enjoy recurring cost savings, and no maintenance or upgrade fees.
